Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

We stock Mighty Mule-compatible weldments and fabrication pieces on our trucks, and most welding or fabrication work for a Mighty Mule gate in Fort Lauderdale runs between $145 and $520 installed, depending on the part and the condition of the surrounding steel. If a bracket, hinge, or mounting ear has cracked or torn away from the gate frame, we can typically weld or replace it same day when the call comes in before early afternoon. Owners usually discover this failure one of two ways: the gate starts scraping or dragging at one end, or the Mighty Mule operator runs but the gate barely moves because the arm or bracket has separated from the leaf.

We’re an independent service provider, not a Mighty Mule affiliate. That means we stock what fails, not what a catalog says should fail. And after 22,000-plus gate calls since 2014, we know exactly which Mighty Mule weld points break first in coastal air.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

The weld-failure pattern is consistent across the Mighty Mule swing-arm lineup: the MM260, MM360, MM371W and MM372W, the MM571W and MM572W, plus earlier FM-series units still hanging on across Fort Lauderdale backyards. The most common fabrication point is the opener’s rear mounting bracket – the plate that bolts or welds to the gate post and carries the entire thrust load of the arm. On gates that were installed with a post-wrap bracket clamped instead of welded, the bracket rarely fails; the gate stile itself tears instead.

If you still have the original installation manual, the model plate is on the side of the control box. If not, measure the arm: MM371/372 units run a 16-inch stroke, the MM571/572 series is 18 inches with a heavier arm tube. The difference matters because the bracket bolt spacing is not identical between series, and a bracket welded for an 18-inch arm will not line up cleanly on a 16-inch unit.

For most Mighty Mule owners, the OEM-versus-aftermarket question comes down to the bracket and the hinge. OEM Mighty Mule brackets are powder-coated mild steel and generally last five to seven years in Fort Lauderdale before rust blooms at the weld toes. A quality aftermarket bracket welded locally in stainless or hot-dip galvanized steel will outlast the opener itself. We quote both, and we tell you which one the math favors on your specific gate.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

Signs Your Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
  • The gate opens fine but the operator arm twitches or lifts at the rear. The rear bracket’s lower weld has cracked and the arm is now levering against the post instead of driving the gate. This gets worse fast and can bend the arm tube if ignored.
  • You hear a rhythmic squeak or pop that matches the gate’s travel. A broken weld flexes on every stroke. The sound is the two faces of the crack rubbing together. It will not “work itself in.”
  • The gate sags toward the latch end and drags the ground or the track. A hinge barrel weld has stretched or partially failed. The gate is now hanging off the operator’s lift geometry rather than the hinges.
  • The opener runs, the arm extends and retracts, but the gate moves only a few inches. The clevis pin or the arm-to-bracket connection has wallowed out or sheared. The motor is pushing against air.
  • Fresh rust bleeding through paint around any bracket or hinge plate. In Fort Lauderdale’s salt air, that’s the canary in the coal mine. The weld is oxidizing from the inside, and the steel is losing section by the month.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we actually charge for Mighty Mule welding and fabrication work in Fort Lauderdale:

Job Installed Price Range
Rear post bracket, welded steel, primed and painted $145 - $260
Rear post bracket, stainless or galvanized aftermarket $210 - $380
Hinge barrel re-weld (single hinge) $95 - $175
Gate stile crack repair and reinforcement plate $180 - $320
Custom bracket fabrication for non-standard post or column $340 - $520

The range depends on whether the old bracket is bolt-on or welded (welded adds grinding time), how much rust we have to cut back before the steel is sound, and whether the gate needs to come off its hinges for the repair. Every price includes the part, the labor, cleanup, and the documented photo record of what we welded, before and after.

And because this is a load-bearing repair on a moving gate, we write the scope and the flat price before any torch lights. You get the number on paper, you approve it, then we start. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if that weld fails within a year, we repair it again at no charge.

What you can safely do yourself: photograph the cracked area in good light from three angles, note whether the bracket is bolted or welded to the post, and find your model number. That’s it. That’s the productive extent of homeowner involvement on a Mighty Mule weld failure.

What you should not do is fire up a Harbor Freight flux-core welder and hope for the best. A gate weld is a dynamically loaded, fatigue-prone connection. It needs the right filler, reasonable penetration, and a repair geometry that doesn’t just move the crack to a new location. We’ve seen owner welds that looked solid for two months and then sheared at the new heat-affected zone, taking the bracket, the arm, and sometimes the opener’s gearbox with them. At that point the repair bill triples.

If you want an honest look before committing, call us at (754) 399-1474. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a bracket, a hinge, or an arm issue, and we’ll give you the written price before the welder ever comes off the truck.
