The compatibility gotcha on Mighty Mule specifically is that older pre-2016 keypads wired into the control board using a 4-conductor ribbon, while post-2016 models moved to a modular plug-and-socket. They are not interchangeable without a small adapter harness, and we carry that harness on the truck. If you’re not sure which generation you have, open the battery compartment: if you see a ribbon with exposed copper traces, it’s the older style. If it’s a snapped-in plastic connector, it’s the newer one. Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

• Keypad lights up but won’t release the gate. This usually means the keypad circuit is fine but the relay output has failed, or the wire run from keypad to control board has corroded at a splice. We trace it with a multimeter and photograph what we find.
• Some buttons work, others don’t. The membrane layer under those specific keys has worn through. It’s not dirt. Cleaning it won’t help. The fix is a new keypad face or unit.
• Intercom rings but no audio, or audio is scratchy and cutting out. Most often it’s a failed electrolytic capacitor on the intercom’s board, or a corroded wire termination where Fort Lauderdale humidity has done its work on the terminal block outside the house.
• Keypad works only when it’s cool out or after heavy rain stops. Classic thermal-intermittent failure or moisture ingress. The board works, then a trace expands or contracts just enough to lose contact. There’s one safe check you can do yourself: confirm the keypad or intercom is actually getting power, and that no visible wire insulation has cracked or pulled loose at the entry point. If you’ve got a multimeter and know how to use it, check for 12 to 24 volts DC at the device. If you’ve got power and it still misbehaves, stop there. These are low-voltage components, so the danger is not electrocution, but the work still goes sideways when an owner opens the control board without knowing what’s already wired where, shorts a terminal, and takes out the gate opener controller too. We have seen that happen on Mighty Mule systems specifically because the control board has exposed terminals with 24 volts AC on it, and one misplaced probe tip fries the board.
