Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Linear specifically: the factory brackets are fine as long as the original welds were good. They often weren’t. Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- The gate clunks on the first two feet of travel. This usually means a hinge weld has cracked and the gate is dropping onto the wheel instead of being carried by the hinge. The motor keeps pulling; the crack keeps spreading. Catch it now and it’s a grind-and-reweld job. Wait three months and it’s a gate frame straightening job.
- You can see daylight through a weld line. Surface rust on a weld is cosmetic. A visible crack or open seam is structural. In Fort Lauderdale’s salt air, an open weld starts rusting internally within weeks, and by the time it’s flaking brown powder, the metal around the weld has lost its strength.
- The actuator bracket moves when the gate moves. Put your hand on the bracket where the Linear arm connects to the gate post. The scrape point tells you exactly where the failure is if you map it: the side that scrapes is the side that’s dropped, and the dropped side is where the hinge or mid-rail weld gave out.
- The gate is visibly out-of-square when closed. Stand at the curb and look at the gate edges against the fence line. A diagonal gap that widens toward the top means the frame has separated at a welded corner joint. The Linear opener is now fighting that misalignment on every cycle, which shortens the motor’s life significantly.

You can safely check a few things: photograph the welds on your hinges, brackets, and gate corners, and look for visible cracks, rust staining, or movement while the gate runs. Make sure nothing is about to fall onto a car or a person; if the gate wobbles when you push it by hand, do not run it, and keep children and pets off it.
