BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

When a weld on your BFT gate fails, or a bracket cracks, or an actuator mount tears loose, we can usually fabricate the replacement or repair the joint same day. The way most owners find the problem is by hearing it first. A cracked weld on a BFT gate hinge doesn’t usually snap all at once. It groans when the gate opens, or the gate sags a half inch at the far end, or the operator starts drawing more current because it’s fighting a joint that’s no longer straight. Sometimes it’s visible: a rust line running through a weld, a hairline crack at a bracket corner. Either way, the gate still moves, so it gets ignored until the day it doesn’t.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has been making gate operators since the 1980s, and the welding and fabrication work we do covers their major residential and light commercial lines. The most common ones we see in Fort Lauderdale are the BFT Deimos series (the BT A400 and A600 operators found on thousands of Florida driveway gates), the Phobos line, the Rigel 5, and the older Icaro and Argo swing operators. Identifying the right part matters because BFT brackets are not universal. A Deimos bracket will not bolt to a Rigel actuator without modification, and the arm geometry differs between swing and slide configurations. We ask for the model and serial off the motor housing or a photo of the data plate before we fabricate anything. For OEM BFT parts, we order to the model number on that plate. For fabricated equivalents, we measure the mounting hole centers, the plate thickness, and the angle of the arm before we cut. In a marine environment like Fort Lauderdale, we also specify 304 or 316 stainless for any fabricated bracket that sits within a few blocks of salt water, because powder-coated mild steel near the Intracoastal lasts about three to five years before it starts to lift.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags noticeably at the free end when open. This usually means a hinge weld has stretched or cracked. The gate leaf pulls down, the latch side drops, and the BFT operator works harder to move the same weight.
• A grinding or groaning sound when the gate cycles. That sound is often metal moving against metal where a weld has broken. The gate still travels because the roller or hinge pin is carrying the load it was never meant to carry.
• Rust-colored streaks or flaking at a joint. In Fort Lauderdale’s humidity and salt air, a cracked weld rusts fast. The crack lets moisture into the joint, and the rust line marks exactly where the failure started.
• The gate shudders or hesitates mid-cycle. A bent or cracked operator bracket changes the arm geometry. The BFT motor senses the extra resistance and may reverse or stall, which looks like a control board problem but is mechanical underneath.
• Fresh cracks growing from a previous weld repair. We see this often enough to treat it as a separate symptom. A weld done on rusted or fatigued metal will break again, usually within a year, unless the surrounding area is cut back and reinforced.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things before calling. Look for visible cracks at hinge points and bracket mounts. Check whether the gate sags when open by lifting the free end gently. Note where sounds come from when the gate moves. What you should not do is attempt to weld a gate leaf or an operator bracket yourself unless you have the equipment and the experience. A bad weld on a moving gate fails without warning, and a gate leaf that lets go while someone is walking through is a serious injury waiting to happen. BFT operator brackets also carry force from the motor through the arm several hundred times a day, and an under-penetrated weld becomes a crack the first week.

Can a cracked bracket be welded, or does it need to be replaced?

It depends on where the crack is and what the bracket is made of. Cracks at the edge of a plate can often be welded and ground flush. Cracks through the center, or cracks that have already been welded once, usually mean the metal has fatigued and the bracket should be replaced or re-fabricated in a heavier gauge. Do you stock BFT welding parts on the truck, or do you have to order?

We stock common BFT mounting plates, hinge stock, and flat bar in several thicknesses on the truck, plus stainless and mild steel tube for gate leaf repairs. For model-specific OEM BFT brackets, we order to your data plate, and that typically takes three to five business days. We’ll quote both options: a fabricated equivalent that goes in same day, or the OEM part that matches what BFT originally spec’d. Up to you, and the price is in writing either way.

How long does a BFT welding repair take?

Most single-joint weld repairs take one to two hours on site. A full bracket re-fabrication with measurements, cutting, welding, and paint takes three to five hours, and that timeline accounts for cleanup and the photo log. If the gate needs to be removed and taken to our shop for a frame rebuild, we usually turn it around in two to three days.
